Pavilion of the Holy See

55th International Exhibition of Art at the Biennale di Venezia

In Principio

Arsenale di Venezia - Sale d’Armi nord

The Holy See participated for the first time at the Biennale with its own Pavilion inspired by the first eleven chapters of the book of Genesis. In Principio was the title chosen by the Commissioner, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, who formed the idea and pushed forward the project, coordinated by Prof. Antonio Paolucci, curator of the Pavilion and Director of the Vatican Museums.

There are three themed areas that were identified and entrusted to three artists to develop, always around the Genesis writings: Creation, for Studio Azzurro, De-Creation for Josef Koukelka and Re-creation for Lawrence Carroll. As an opener, a trilogy from the seventies by Tano Festa, in particular his reflections on the Creation of Adam from the Sistine Chapel.
